Marshmallow was a product developed in partnership with Cross River. Named after the famous Stanford Marshmallow Experiment, Marshmallow was designed as a savings account and a digital platform made specifically for children. With guidance and support from parents, the platform aims to help children develop good financial habits and attain financial literacy in a game-like environment.
We developed several possible concepts and ultimately settled on “Summer Camp” as the theme for the platform, inspired by the act of roasting marshmallows by a campfire. The Summer Camp theme also hinted at the idea of independence and personal growth, values that were foundational to the creation of the app.
Parents can not only deposit allowances directly into the child’s account, but they can also set up challenges or chores and reward them with actual money once completed.
We had a symbiotic relationship with the product team. We visualized their ideas for the UX/UI and, in turn, inspired feature ideas they hadn’t thought of. We further gamified the experience by creating “badges” and “goalposts.” To encourage long-term saving for a particular item, parents can even “pin” an item to their board (home screen), and the child can track their progress in saving for it.
